RIVERS & TIDES by Thomas Riedelsheimer (GERMANY I 2000 I 90 MIN I OmU)

THE FILM

Andy Goldsworthy is known worldwide for his fascinating works with natural materials. Ice, stones, leaves, twigs, water – Goldsworthy works with what he finds, and mostly where he finds it. Some of his works persist in the landscape, others fade away, melt, are blown away by the wind. Goldsworthy’s photographs alone capture his short-lived works in the transience of time, a fascination of a special kind.

THE TALK

“Art does not reproduce the visible, but makes visible” (Paul Klee)

In conversation with our guests and audience, we discuss how to approach sustainability issues and debates through the medium of art. Can art show new perspectives, create spaces, respond to the challenges of the global climate crisis? Can art climate crisis?

A series of events organized by the Office of Education for Sustainable Development (SBNE / District Office Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf) in cooperation with the Delphi Lux and the Berlin State Agency for Civic Education.

“Tom Albrecht is a Berlin veteran. He was the first environmental officer at TU Berlin in the 1990s. Today he is a curator and runs the only “Gallery for Sustainable Art” in the city. What can art contribute to the climate debate that the current discourse can’t? We paid a visit to the hotbed of sustainability issues in Berlin-Kreuzberg.”

Tom Albrecht shows his  installation “Sensor” and his object “Transformation”.

“Transformation” If until now we took the collected energy from the planet Earth and caused an existential problem, now we have to obtain it directly from the sun. This requires our social, economic and technical transformation.
“Sensor” detects air pollution outside and reports it to a global citizen network and displays it inside.

Participating artists:
Tom Albrecht, Conrad Brockstedt, Barbara Czarnojahn, Lupe Godoy, Rosika Janko-Glage, Maria Korporal, Lina Schobel + Paul Reßl, Andrea Streit + Nancy Happ, Burchard Vossmann, Helga Wagner

Dinos, aliens and electronic waste
When dinosaurs meet aliens and bags of waste, there can really only be one topic: the climate crisis.
The phenomenon permeates all areas of our lives. Without consistent and decisive countermeasures, all changes run towards a critical point – the “tipping point”. From this point on, the factors can no longer be influenced, the system takes on a life of its own.
So the new exhibition at the VBK is also called “Climate Tipping Points.” He presents works created as part of a competition.
The idea came from VBK member Andrea Streit. In the end, 10 artists were selected who focus on completely different aspects of the theme in the works submitted.
In their works, the artists deal with the causes and effects of climate change. The forms of expression range from painting, collage, video, object and installation to conceptual art.
The result is a very multi-layered exhibition on a virulent topic – exciting, discussion-stimulating and entertaining at the same time.

Statement

For what I perceive in the environment and society, I try to create images or express myself in action. I see gaping wounds in our development socially, economically and environmentally. My center of life is Berlin connected to the world. My pictures and actions are meant to critically reflect reality in a playful – often humorous – way. Human existence, its development and its manifold manifestations inspire me to object, installation, action, landart, text and photo.

To bring about more sustainability is my intention. Living this sustainability is my consistent experiment and means credibility to me. Social development and human concepts of life are the focus of my reflections. With my works I want to contribute to create changes in the sense of sustainability and health for the next generations.

I enter into a process in order to influence it, as I did, for example, in my work as an environmental officer at a technical university for many years. I see social issues such as our handling of energy and materials – both as consumers and as polluters – in a social, economic and ecological context, from which the claim of sustainability consistently arises in my work.

I use everyday materials, like the Arte Povera (Ital. poor art), which uses common and everyday materials like willow branches, glass bottles. Our throwaway society provides me with a wealth of material. I also use technology such as electronic controls and electric motors from old appliances. My art, like the Happening and Fluxus artists, is about influencing human life, not about closing art off from life.

Dr. Peter Funken: “His art shows poetic humour. Tom Albrecht works with simple means, shows pleasure in his work. He engages in interpretation and reinterpretation where he lives. His background is in idea and conceptual art.”
