2026: We residents don’t want to wait any longer for the approved diagonal barrier to be implemented on Waldemar Bridge as part of a Kiezblock. With the capacity of the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district office, it will still take 10 years in 2026.

Waldemarstraße, Legien- and Leuschnerdamm, with their cobblestones, are used by north-south through traffic at excessive speeds. Drivers don’t care about the speed limit signs of 10, 20, and 30. This creates noise and danger! We are residents with children in these buildings, with three daycares in the neighborhood and the social project for people with disabilities. Collisions frequently occur at intersections, and the bollards in front of Wirthaus Henne and at Oranienplatz are regularly knocked down due to excessive speed.

Bollards in front of the “Henne” tavern. After the historic bollards on the right were knocked over several times, the district office installed these massive ones. The one on the left has already clearly been hit again.

The CDU-led Berlin Senate does not want Kiezblocks and provides no funds for bollards and personnel to install them.

2025: Residents of Waldemarstrasse are fighting back with a petition.

Now in the election year on September 20, 26 for the Berlin House of Representatives, it would be good to ask the candidates about neighborhood blocks and their support. We could also borrow devices that measure noise, speed, and the number of vehicles. I would like to start a residents’ initiative.
